A short bus ride of 5 hours and we arrive in the most expensive town in Argentina – El Calafate. It also has the most number of tourists. Here for one reason, *the* glacier – Perito Moreno; and it is stunning. It is enormous, 16 storeys high and moving at about 2 metres per day, so there is a lot of calving ice fall. The system of walkways mean that you can get pretty close to the action, and we are able to see and hear a number of falling ice chunks.

Its easy accessibility also means that there are hordes of tourists (even in this, the off season) constantly getting in the way of, what should be a serene spectacle of nature. Despite the chattering tour groups and extremely expensive bus ride and entrance fee, it is a wonderful experience to see huge chunks of ice crash into the surrounding lake.
